Gran Posada and Las Posadas
Las Posadas are a treasured tradition an integral part of our Advent celebrations here at the Cathedral. Members from all congregations gather in people’s homes across Houston to commemorate the journey of Joseph and Mary from Nazareth to Bethlehem in search of a safe refuge where Mary could give birth to the baby Jesus. On Sunday December 15, join Cathedral members young and old from every service for The Gran Posada and Cena Festiva! Las Posadas celebrations, a tradition which began in Mexico, commemorate the journey Joseph and Mary made to Bethlehem in search of shelter where Mary could give birth to Jesus. The Gran Posada and festive supper have become a beloved Cathedral tradition, and we are honored to have Bishop Orlando Gómez of the Diocese of Costa Rica as our special guest this year.
Sunday, December 15
5 p.m. Bilingual Eucharist
6 p.m. Festive Supper – featuring the music of Mendeliz
6:30 p.m. Bishop Orlando Gómez of Costa Rica and Cathedral Dean Nat Katz present
7 p.m. Gran Posada and Celebration
The evening begins at 5 p.m. with a contemplative-style bilingual eucharist in the Cathedral. Immediately following, we’ll enjoy traditional Latin American foods and the music of Mendeliz. After supper, Bishop Orlando and Dean Katz will discuss the deep connections between our churches and the work we share. Then we’ll head out to the courtyard to begin the Gran Posada. We’ll provide song-sheets and a little practice, so you’ll know what to do whether it’s your first posada or your fiftieth. Together, we’ll knock on doors until we find shelter for the Holy Family, and we’ll celebrate our success with piñatas, dancing, and treats for the children. Christmas is coming! The days are becoming shorter and busier. Sharing the Gran Posada is a bright and joyful way to prepare our hearts for the arrival of the Light.
