Grief & Mourning

Journeying through Grief books are provided to parishioners who have experienced a death. They are a set of four short books sent at crucial times during the first year after the loss of a loved one. Learn More

Walking the Mourner's Path is a Christ based, prayer centered, spiritually directed program. It is carefully crafted to focus on one concept per week to allow the participants to work through their grief without feeling overwhelmed. A workbook for each individual provides the framework with prayers, reflections, and exercises for each week, and homework assignments designed to enhance the experience.

Facilitators are not licensed psychological counselors, but are lay ministers specifically trained to lead this program. In no sense do we offer psychological therapy. If you are dealing with grief, are seeking an open format to talk, or need someone to talk with one-on-one please contact Minister for Pastoral Care, Claire Soard at [email protected] and she will be glad to connect you with those resources. (Registration Required) Learn More

On All Souls Day the Cathedral is open for a personal time of reflection. All are welcome who would like to honor a loss no matter how long ago, or what it is.

There is no formal service or guidance provided so those who come are can use the time as they would like bringing items that you might find helpful during your time such as a Book of Common Prayer, a Bible, a book of poetry, a picture of your loved one, etc. (Registration Required)

    Claire Soard

    Minister of Pastoral Care

Claire Soard grew up in Arlington, Texas with her family. Being connected to a Christian community has always been a central part of her life. Claire attended Baylor University where she studied Social Work.

(Sic ‘Em, Bears!) Licensed as a Social Worker since 2004, she brings years of experience working with
faith and community-based organizations, including a residential group home, community center, and
churches. During the last eight years, Claire has spent time particularly focused on issues around trauma and suffering, as well as the foster care and adoption systems. She has served in volunteer and staff ministry positions in three Episcopal Churches in the Diocese of Texas. Claire has also been a collaborator with the Episcopal Health Foundation’s Congregational Engagement team since 2017.
Claire is married to The Rev. John Soard, and shares four beautiful, energetic children ages 9 to 13 with him, along with their dog who lives for the few cold days in Houston and a hamster who begs for sunflower seeds daily. Claire loves to run, read fantasy and science fiction, and drink iced coffee.
About her new position, Claire shared, “I am excited to join the ministry of the Cathedral as the Minister of Pastoral Care. I have enjoyed hearing about the good work already happening through this ministry and look forward to finding new ways to offer help and support. Life has hard seasons, sometimes many hard seasons, and I believe Jesus is with us. I look forward to getting to know the people of the Cathedral and finding the comfort of Jesus together.”

Stewardship and Giving: Support Cathedral Ministries

Generously responding to God’s gifts is a reflection of spirituality and recognition that we are the stewards of his bounty. It is a way of life — something we do day in and day out.

There are many ways to make financial gifts to support the ministries, pastoral care, education, vitality, and growth of Christ Church Cathedral. We are grateful to donors who graciously make one-time gifts, annual pledges, ongoing planned giving, and who find other ways to offer their help forwarding the work of our ministries.
