Christ Church Cathedral invites you to mark your calendars and plan to join us for some or all of our festive Choral Evensongs offered throughout the program year! Evensong goes back nearly five hundred years, with its earliest expression found during the time of the Protestant Reformation. The service is a sung version of evening prayer, one of the daily offices found in our current Book of Common Prayer, and has been present since our earliest version of the Book of Common Prayer dating back to1549. Choral Evensong adds the glorious element of having the choir offer composed settings of various elements of the service, including sung responses, collects, and anthems.
Evensongs are also the perfect opportunity to invite new friends or those curious about our Cathedral. Most of them (to exclude Lent and Palm Sunday) are also followed by a reception in Reynolds hall. Please look for more detailed information as the specific dates draw near. We look forward to this special time of worship and fellowship together.
This year, the Cathedral adds a special Evensong to the lineup to kick off the season. On Sunday, October 20th at 5pm, Christ Church is honored to host the opening event of the East Texas Pipe Organ Festival with Evensong at 5pm, followed by an organ recital by acclaimed concert artist Scott Dettra, Organist at Highland Park United Methodist Church, Dallas. This event draws participants from across the country and is a wonderful way to open our glorious campus to those visiting for the first time. Below is the full schedule of 2024-2025 Evensong dates which take place on Sundays at 5pm with an organ recital beforehand at 4:15pm (except in Lent) in the Cathedral:
