The Dean’s Hour

Sunday, January 19 – Collects as Prayer and Poetry with The Very Rev. Nathaniel Katz

The Collect is one of the most common and fundamental forms of prayer used in Anglican worship. Collects feature prominently in every liturgy from the Daily Office, to the Eucharist, to burial, marriage and ordination. They are, quite literally, a collection of prayers we lift up to God for particular times and purposes.  Like much of our liturgical tradition, collects are a form of poetry with a form unto itself. In this session, Dean Katz will discuss the Collect as a liturgical and literary form that is open and available to us as a spiritual practice in our own time and place.
