Dean’s Hour: Beyond “Bellhops of History” Unpacking and Reanimating the Treasures of Christian Tradition

Join Interim Dean, Gary Jones for a four-part Dean’s Hour series – Beyond “Bellhops of History.*” Unpacking and Reanimating the Treasures of Christian Tradition. Dean Jones will discuss how signs and sacraments are sources of power and portals to a deeper life that is only dimly intuited or altogether ignored in our over-busy, hyper-rational, and materialistic society. Dates: January, 29, February 5, February 12, and February 19.

Instead of dutifully carrying and passing along the baggage of Christianity from one generation to the next, Christians are invited to unpack these treasures and try them on for ourselves. Our powerful sacraments and stories, our myths and symbols, are available to “clothe ourselves” in them, interiorize them, and thus find ourselves becoming living reminders of “something more” in this world. Christian worship spaces are more than pretty buildings; our liturgies are more than magisterial rites; our stories are more than comforting or explanatory tales; and our sacraments and symbols are more than mere signs of an elusive mystery. Instead, when unpacked and inhabited in our own day, they are revealed as sources of power and portals to a deeper life that is only dimly intuited or altogether ignored in our over-busy, hyper-rational, and materialistic society.

The Cathedral’s Dean’s Hour is held on Sundays at 10 a.m. in Reynolds Hall. This is a time for Adult Christian formation. Cathedral Clergy, other parish leaders, and guest speakers address matters of faith, church life, and community.
