Building a Faith that Endures - in-person
6-7 p.m., Sundays, Sanders Hall (Sept. 29 - Oct. 13)
Life is hard. Talk to anyone about the details of their lives, and you will realize everybody struggles. Everyone has overwhelming seasons. If you have ever felt unsure of how to let the “peace of Christ rule in your heart” this 3-week series is for you. If you are walking alongside someone who is struggling in a hard place, you are invited to join this space. No one gets through this life without pain and grief, anxiety and challenges. How do we build a faith that can endure all that life will throw at us? Come to Sanders after The Well at 6pm – Sept 29, Oct 6, and 13th to join the discussion: *What can we do when we are overwhelmed with the weight of the brokenness we see in the world and in ourselves? *How might we reframe our understanding of health, identity, and limitations to invite a more gracious, connected perspective? *How might the Psalms guide us as we walk with those in the valleys? * What practices might help us build a faith for the good days and the terrible days?
Welcome to Worship - Hybrid
3:30 - 4:30 p.m., Sundays (Oct. 6 - Nov. 24)
Some of the earliest baptized believers were those who witnessed the events on the day of Pentecost as described in the 2nd chapter of the book of Acts. There we are told that about 3,000 people were baptized as a result of all they saw and heard on that day. What do you do next after a day such as this? Acts 2:42 tells us, “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.” Every Sunday in worship, we follow in these earliest believers’ practices. We, too, commit ourselves to hearing, interpreting, and living into the apostles’ teachings, and to fellowship with one another in community. We also break bread (and share wine) in Holy Communion, and make our prayers together in our worship services. The Episcopal Church has a rich history of worship which employs, among other things, sacred space, ceremonial gestures, music, word, and sacrament to create a time of worship that is set apart from everyday life in order for the worshiper to be nourished and equipped to go back into everyday life with faith, hope, and love. Because of this long and rich heritage, not all of what we do is intuitive. On the Sunday afternoons in October and November (Oct. 6-Nov. 24), this 8-week series will take participants through an introduction to worship in the Episcopal Church framed through the themes of Acts 2:42. We will address how things like sacred space, ceremonial gestures, vestments, word, and sacrament employ ancient practices, both from our scriptures and our tradition, which empower the participant to live more fully into their baptismal covenant as members of Christ’s body in the world.

Tattoos on the Heart: An Invitation to Belovedness – in-person
6:30 - 8 p.m. Mondays (Oct.7 - Nov. 25)
Join Dean Katz on Monday evenings in October and November to explore our identity as God’s beloved and what that means for our lives. The primary text guiding the series will be Tattoos on the Heart: The Power of Boundless Compassion by Father Gregory Boyle, SJ. Each session will include discussion of Father Boyle’s reflections from his ministry to gang members paired with a study of scriptural passages referenced in the book. Tattoos on the Heart is the first of Father Boyle’s books that reflect on nearly 40 years of ministry to gang members in Los Angeles. Over that time, thousands of gang members have passed through Homeboy Industries, the organization Father Boyle founded under the premise that “nothing stops a bullet like a job.” The experiences he shares in Tattoos on the Heart powerfully illustrate the redemptive capacity of the Gospel truth that God loves each and every one of us in the same way that God loved Jesus as a beloved child, in whom God is well pleased.
