Children

Children’s Education

The mission of the Cathedral's children's ministry is to welcome children into the Cathedral family and to help them feel safe and cared for, as a reflection of God's love as they grow in their faith.

We want children to know they are made in God's image; there is nothing they could do that would make God love them less.

Our goals are to help them know Christ and to make Him known.

Learn more about Christ Church Cathedral's holistic vision for children's and youth spiritual formation and community service by downloading our "Roots to Fruits" flyer.

Follow us on Instagram to see more about what's happening in our children's ministry program, and download our calendar.

At the Cathedral, we believe in meeting each family's needs where they are, and as their needs change. We heartily welcome families to bring their children to services, or let them play in our professionally staffed childcare center, or try a mix of both that works for you.

Children in our worship services

We welcome children to participate and learn as fully as they are able in services, and we understand their inclinations to stretch, move, and wonder. In our pews, there is room for everyone, no matter how large, small, or wiggly.

Worship bags with kid-friendly activities are provided at both main entrances to the Cathedral for each service. Bags contain a children’s service leaflet, a copy of Meet Agnus (a story book), and some quiet toys. Additionally, copies of the Beginner’s Bible for Children and the Paraclete Kid’s Bible are available in the pews.

When we hear the sounds of children in church, we will ultimately hear the sounds of church in children.

Childcare Center

8:45 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Parents may leave their children ages six weeks to five years in our childcare center. Through music, play, and the Gospel story, our professional childcare staff is committed to providing a safe and loving environment. Our ushers and welcome team members can help you find the childcare center.

Children’s Sunday School

September through May at the 10:00 a.m. Education Hour

All adults who work with children are compliant with "Safeguarding God's Children" through the Episcopal Diocese of Texas.

SPARK TWOs curriculum helps our youngest learners engage the Gospel through music, stories, crafts, and games. Adult and youth volunteers lead the class with the assistance of the childcare staff.

Three-year-old through 1st grade classes use the Cathedral Godly Play curriculum. The class structure follows the pattern of worship. There is a time to share the story in community, and time to respond individually through art materials and story manipulatives. At the end of the response time, the community of children comes together for prayers and a “feast.” We take dietary restrictions into account.

Upper church school students, our 2nd through 5th graders, move on to the workshop Rotation model. Under this method, we teach the same Bible story, liturgical theme, or seasonally applicable truth for two weeks in a row to all students. During the two weeks of a lesson, grade levels rotate through a variety of creative workshops, learning through art, videos, games, drama, play, and more. The same teacher presents a single workshop to the different grades, while students experience a single lesson in multiple ways.

The Lighthouse Program for Children with Special Needs

The Lighthouse Classroom is a safe place for young people with special needs. We meet children and families where they are. With that in mind, we like to meet with parents and families to create a plan that works for everyone. Please contact Minister for Children and Families KariAnn Lessner to learn more and make an appointment.

Want to know more?

On Sunday mornings during the 10 o’clock Education Hour, children's ministry council members and Sunday School teachers are available on the second floor balcony of the Jones Building to greet parents and answer questions about the many programs for families at Christ Church Cathedral. The Children’s Ministry Council also publishes a monthly e-newsletter, Cathedral Families, and we welcome you to subscribe.
