Getting Connected to Serve

Kids Hope USA — Christ Church Cathedral is an affiliate of Kids Hope USA, a national mentoring organization that partners one church with one public school for the purpose of mentoring at-risk kids. Our partner school is Rusk, a magnet school for Science and Technology. Rusk is on Garrow Street, a 10-minute drive east of the Cathedral. We have 19 mentors this year. There are 10 children still waiting for mentors. If you are interested in being a mentor, a substitute mentor or a prayer partner, please contact Edie Hoffman at edieh@christchurchcathedral.org or 713-590-3329.

Helping Hands Ministry — You pull up to a stop light, and a person in need walks toward you with a sign. God’s call to reach to help one another asks us to respond thoughtfully. The Helping Hands ministry of the Mission Outreach Council helps by providing you with a non-cash gift that shows God’s love in a meaningful way. Each Sunday, the Helping Hands basket, located on a table in the cloister between Reynolds Hall (the Great Hall) and Latham Hall, contains bottles of water, a snack and a helpful information card, and you may pick up one or two to keep in your car. God’s love is for everyone. Show it with a Helping Hand.

Become a Case Management Volunteer at The Beacon — If you have an interest in working as a Case Management Volunteer at The Beacon, you will have three opportunities to attend an orientation session to learn more about what all is entailed in this rewarding ministry. The actual Case Management Volunteer training takes place in mid-August, but you must attend one of the three orientations to be eligible to become a volunteer. Orientation sessions are scheduled for Wednesday, July 28, from 12 – 1 p.m. in the Jeffers Conference Room and 6 – 7 p.m. in the McGehee Conference Room, and Sunday, August 1, from 2:30 – 3:30 p.m. in Dunn Conference Room B at The Beacon. To register, or for more information, contact Coley Jones at cjones@christchurchcathedral.org or 713-220-9765 by the day before the session you’d like to attend.

COMPASS is the independent nonprofit agency in the Dunn Center that works with the homeless in their efforts to find jobs. Every Tuesday, COMPASS welcomes visitors to meet the staff and clients, and observe the many layers of the work that has continued quietly for over 27 years, right in the Cathedral’s own backyard. To paraphrase Morrie, who also had a visitor every Tuesday, life takes on meaning when you devote yourself to the community around you. COMPASS is at 1212 Prairie in the John S. Dunn Outreach Center, just across the street from the Cathedral. Plan your visit any Tuesday between 9:30 and 1:30. For more information, contact Cynthia Brannon, Executive Director, at 713-229-8319 ext.1105, cbrannon@houstoncompass.org, or visit the website: www.houstoncompass.org.

Volunteer at The Beacon, which is open to our homeless neighbors on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. We always need help, especially on Mondays and Fridays. For more information or to volunteer, please contact our Community Outreach Coordinator, Cydney Cameron, at ccameron@chomhouston.org or 713-220-9737.

Brigid’s Hope at The Beacon — We need women who are interested in mentoring and providing community support to our women of Brigid’s Hope, a program that provides support and assistance for homeless women in transition from Texas prisons and jails. In 7 years, thanks primarily to volunteer support, not one graduate of Brigid’s Hope has returned to prison. For more information, please contact Brigid’s Hope Program Manager Regina Walker, LMSW, at rwalker@chomhouston.org or 713-590-3318.
