A candlelit procession at Las Posadas

Las Posadas, a tradition with roots in 16th-century Mexico, is an occasion for the faithful of all ages to anticipate the celebration of the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem.

By tradition, a procession is led to the door of the house (la posada) by youngsters carrying a nacimiento, the scene of the birth of the Messiah. The procession chants a song, appealing to the master of the house (el dueño) to be kind and offer shelter for the night. Those in the house chant a response that they do not know who is being so importunate as to ask and suggesting that the seekers be on their way or suffer, maybe even a beating! Cry after cry for lodging goes unheeded until finally el dueño realizes the identity of the Holy Family, flings wide the door and shouts “¡Entren, santos peregrinos!” (“Enter, holy pilgrims!”) All then enter for prayers and refreshments, exchanging the greetings of the season.

The Cathedral carries on this tradition with Posadas each night at the homes of parishioners from December 16–22, and in Reynolds Hall on December 23. Call 713-222-2593 for more information.
