May Fete

Our parish has celebrated May Fete since at least 1899, and the Cathedral is again readying for this annual festive event. Please mark your calendar for Sunday, May 7, as we come together as a community to honor our century-old spring tradition and to celebrate the ministry of the Cathedral.

We will begin our festival day with a 10 o’clock worship service in English featuring the liturgy of the 1892 Book of Common Prayer, which was in use at the earliest known May Fete celebrations. (This special service will take the place of the usual 9 and 11 o’clock services.)

Following the Eucharist, we will all gather in the Bishop’s Courtyard to watch the traditional procession of the Sunday School classes, the crowning of the May King and May Queen, and the maypole dance. From there we’ll delight in games and crafts in the courtyards, listen to familiar songs from the band, Beetle, feast at the May Fete luncheon, and enjoy treats at the Grand Bake Sale.

Our day begins and ends with praise to God, and the festival will conclude at 2 p.m. with a Eucharist service in Spanish in the Cathedral.

Schedule for the day:

  • 10:00 a.m. – Worship and Eucharist using a liturgy based on the 1892 Book of Common Prayer
  • 11:30 a.m. – Sunday School parade, crowning of the May King and May Queen, and maypole dance in the Bishop’s Courtyard
  • 12:00 p.m. – Luncheon, Grand Bake Sale, hot dogs, agua fresca, and music from Beetle in Reynolds Hall. Crafts, games, and amusements on Huffington Courtyard playground and in the Bishop’s Courtyard.
