Cathedral Health and Outreach Ministries

As part of a hundred-year tradition of charity, Christ Church Cathedral
established three independent 501(c)(3) nonprofits (Cathedral Health Ministries, Brigid’s Hope, and The Beacon) over the span of the last decade. It was recently determined that banding together under one mission would provide a more streamlined, effective administration of programs and funding, benefiting our clients and community. Thus, in the summer of 2007 these three entities merged into a single nonprofit organization, Cathedral Health and Outreach Ministries (CHOM).

CHOM has five separate programs:

CHOM was created with a vision for a comprehensive ministry addressing hunger, health, hygiene, clothing, employment, legal and housing issues. Located in the Cathedral’s John S. Dunn Outreach Center, CHOM is not required to pay rent, utilities or facilities costs; the Cathedral’s generosity allows CHOM to dedicate the majority of funds to direct services for the homeless and indigent. In fact, eighty-nine percent of every CHOM dollar spent goes directly to program services.

The Beacon
Through this day center, we offer a hot meal, clothing, private shower / lavatory facilities, laundry services and pastoral outreach / care to people living on the streets of Houston. These services are offered on weekends, when other homeless service providers tend to be closed. THE BEACON works with the other CHOM programs as well as the nonprofit agencies located in the Dunn Center so that the basic needs of individuals are addressed in a single location. Importantly, more than 80% of Beacon services are operated by volunteers; over 500 clients receive services each day of operation.

Cathedral Clinic
Also in the Dunn Center, this clinic combines primary health care and psychiatric treatment / mental health counseling with intensive case management to address the unique needs of men, women and children living on Houston’s streets. Professionally staffed by our partners at Healthcare for the Homeless – Houston (HHH), this clinic was initially the dream of the Cathedral. HHH and CHOM collaborated in its vision and planning and share equally in funding its operation. It is estimated that 1500 unduplicated clients will be served in 2007.

Brigid’s Hope
By providing support and assistance for homeless women in transition from Texas prisons and jails, incarceration is transformed to community contribution. This intensive year-long program includes housing (through Cathedral partner, New Hope Housing), material support, counseling, coordination of appropriate services and intensive support and guidance through volunteer mentors. This small program (15 clients) makes big changes and a very deep impact, not only in the lives of the very vulnerable women it directly serves, but also in the community through those women.

Cathedral Justice Project
This program was created during the evolution of The Beacon and The Dunn Center. Newly added as a CHOM program, The Justice Project has been providing pro-bono legal services to our street community since early 2006 and currently has approximately 250 clients.
